William D. Hedges: Military spending won't keep us 'strong'

I find it of concern that, according to the current issue of Atlantic, the U.S. ranks 14th in reading, 21st in science and 30th in mathematics. At the same time we are spending unbelievable amounts of money on the military to keep our nation strong. When, if ever, are we going to heed Thomas Jefferson's famous words, i.e. "If a nation in a state of civilization expects to be both ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be."
