I've been nervous about the coming presidential election. What gives me the jitters is the incredibly bold efforts by the Republican Party in states across the country to make it harder for those without government issued I.D. to cast their vote. This openly sinister plot to deprive citizens of their Constitutional right to vote is being carried out by the so-called party of smaller government and less regulation. Yeah, right. We've heard that line before, but the truth is Republicans love government control when it benefits them.
The Grand Old Party created the TSA, Homeland Security and the Patriot Act, the biggest wasters of tax dollars and the biggest loss of civil rights in the history of this country. Smaller government my rear end. Sadly, it ain't over yet. Republicans object to regulating industrial polluters and Wall Street, but they have no problem putting a woman's body under government control.
The Republican Party says these new voter restriction laws are needed to prevent voter impersonation at the polls. That is a bald faced lie, a whopper of a lie. The truth is that since the year 2000 there have been 10, that's right, 10 prosecuted cases of voter impersonation at the polls in the entire country! There are146 million registered voters in the United States. You do the math.
Their deliberate effort to keep people out of the voting booth targets inner-city residents, the elderly who use public transportation or no longer drive, and the poor who have limited travel options and no spare money to pay the fees that are often imposed and could cost as much as $100. In most of the 37 states where Republicans went after these groups of voters, the groups targeted are predominantly poor, African American or Hispanic. Can you guess who they were planning to vote for?
Jim Crow, poll taxes and literacy tests were finally outlawed by the federal government when I was young, but we can all clearly see that the Republican Party has not given up on finding new ways to keep minorities and the poor from voting. The Republicans don't think they can win this election fairly, so they are cheating. What scares me most is they're not even trying to hide their openly racist and unconstitutional agenda. Where are all those Tea Party folks who say they love the Constitution so much? How come they're not on the sidewalks waving their flags? Surely their absence has nothing with race, does it?
