Area events raise breast cancer awareness

Breast Cancer Symposium: Shands Cancer Hospital at the University of Florida will host the event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Light hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served, followed by a seminar featuring presentations and a panel discussion on the latest advances in clinical treatment of breast cancer, survivorship and treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Paint a Pink Pumpkin: UF&Shands host a Pink Pumpkin Painting Party at the Shands Hospital Founder's Gallery from 1 to 3 p.m. Arts in Medicine artists will facilitate the painting party for patients and their families, along with faculty, staff and students. Artists also will deliver pink pumpkins to patient rooms and to room-bound patients to decorate.
Dinner fundraiser: The Micanopy Masonic Lodge in downtown Micanopy will host a fundraising dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. to support the UF&Shands Oncology Nurse Navigator Program. Dinner selections are salmon or braised pork loin, spinach fettucine alfredo, mixed vegetables, garden salad and garlic bread. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: The annual walk begins at 8 a.m. at Northeast Park, 400 NE 16th Ave. Don walking shoes and pink bras for the annual American Cancer Society walk. UF&Shands teams will receive a “UF&Shands: Thinking Pink Everyday of the Year” T-shirt, and the first 200 people to stop by the UF&Shands booth before the walk can pick up a hot pink UF&Shands grocery tote. UF&Shands Pink Pumpkin Fest and Pedal-Off: The UF&Shands Pink Pumpkin Fest begins at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Archer Road and Gale Lemerand Drive when cyclists take off in the Pink Pumpkin Pedal-Off charity ride. At 10 a.m., the festival begins with the second annual Pink Pumpkin Painting Party, a bounce house for youths and a Pee Wee Pink Pumpkin Bicycle Parade with prizes for children 12 and younger who decorate their bikes for breast cancer awareness. A pavilion will be staffed with health care professionals providing free screenings and counseling. For the bicycle ride, the fundraiser benefits triple negative breast cancer research. Participants can choose a 20-, 40- or 55-mile route as they tour the University of Florida campus and are encouraged to wear a pink ribbon to honor a loved one affected by breast cancer. All About You Angels: Twelve breast cancer survivor/models featured in a specialty “All About You Angels” calendar will meet the public and sign the calendars from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the Ocala Hilton, 3600 SW 36th Ave., Ocala. Proceeds from calendar sales benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The event will include food and drinks provided by local restaurants, and vendors sharing information. CF 5K benefit: The College of Central Florida Student Activities Board will host its third annual 5K benefit run beginning at 7 a.m. at 3001 SW College Road, Ocala. “Standing Up to Breast Cancer:” The Advanced Imaging Center is offering digital mammograms at $179 and pink flamingo lawn ornaments for $10 as part of its second campaign to raise awareness and promote the importance of early detection. Flamingos are available at Ocala Regional Medical Center, West Marion Community Hospital, Ocala Health System's Senior Wellness Community Center and Advanced Imaging Center locations, while supplies last. Flamingo sale proceeds will be donated to Michelle-O-Gram, a local organization that provides funding for mammograms for patients who cannot afford them.
