A Live Oak man was killed and another man critically injured early Wednesday morning when the driver went off the road, overturned and hit a tree.
Jonathan Michael Matthews, 21, was killed, according to a Florida Highway Patrol media release. Passenger Dillon Wayne Gardner, 18, of Live Oak, was taken to Shands at the University of Florida with critical injuries.
The accident happened about 12:45 a.m. on Suwannee County Road 249 south of County Road 132 about six miles south of Live Oak.
FHP reported that Matthews was driving a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup south on CR 249 when he drove off the road on a curve, overcorrected and lost control.
The pickup went across the road, overturned on its roof and hit a tree. FHP said Matthews was ejected and the truck landed on top of him. Matthews died at the scene. Gardner was flown to Shands UF by helicopter.
The FHP report states that Matthews was not wearing his seat belt while Gardner was.
