UF's Lauren Embree and Danielle Collins won their respective opening-round singles matches in the main draw of the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club on Thursday.
Embree held true to her seed, as the Gator All-American defeated Arizona State's 13-ranked Jacqueline Cako, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16 in the national event.
This is the first collegiate event of the year for the third-seeded Embree, who also advanced to this round of last year's competition.
Embree plays Penn State's 52nd-ranked Petra Januskova in the round of 16 on Friday beginning at approximately 10:45 a.m. PT.
Collins extended her career-opening win streak to 10 after posting a 6-4, 6-2 victory against UNLV's 43rd Lucia Batta, who earned her way into the main draw by winning three rounds of qualifying matches.
Collins also won three qualifying rounds after playing her way through three matches in pre-qualifying competition. Collins opponent in the round of 16 is Virginia's Julia Elbaba, ranked fourth among all freshmen in the country and upset top-seeded and fourth-ranked Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar in straight sets.
“Both Danielle and Lauren did a great job today,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “That first round match in the main draw can always be a bit tricky but both handled themselves well and played solid. Tomorrow's a big day for both.”
Two rounds of singles are scheduled to be played on Friday.
Collins and Embree began their day on the doubles court, where they lost 8-3 to Tennessee's 34th-ranked Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely. The Gator pair will play in the consolation draw beginning on Friday. Embree captured the last year's consolation doubles title with then-senior Joanna Mather.
