Gainesville mother charged with child abuse

A Gainesville woman was charged with child abuse Monday after her children showed up at school with red marks on their faces and arms, according to an arrest report.
Gainesville police charged Krystal Shirlan Smith, 30, of 1231 NW 45th Ave., with two counts of child abuse.
The report states that police met with the two children at Stephen Foster Elementary School on Monday.
One child, age 7, told police she she was hit on the face and body several times with a leather belt on Sunday, the report states. The girl told police her mother gets angry a lot and beats her and her sister for no reason. The officer wrote that he saw red marks on her face and arms.
The other child, age 9, said her mother hit her on her arms with the belt, the report states. The officer saw blistering marks on her arms.
Both girls said they feared their mother and did not want to return home, the report states.
