MindTree’s local hires ahead of expectations

MindTree Limited is ahead of its hiring projections for Gainesville as clients are signing up for the company's U.S.-based information technology and software development services faster than expected, said Scott Staples, president, Americas, which is the American branch of the company.

With eight new hires starting Monday, MindTree is up to 35 employees and expects to have 100 by the end of the first quarter of 2013.

The original plan called for 35 employees at the end of December and 100 by June 2013. The company plans to hire 400 employees in Gainesville over the next four years with an average salary of $80,000.

MindTree develops software for Fortune 2000 companies and independent software vendors worldwide, with headquarters in Bangalore, India, and Warren, N.J.

Its first U.S. Development Center officially opened for business in Gainesville on Monday after moving last week into the third floor of the Ayers building at 720 SW Second Ave. The company has a year lease on space in the University of Florida Innovation Hub across the street and will use the space for training and client work.

MindTree opened the center to take advantage of a trend of companies moving offshore software jobs to the U.S.

"It's still very early, but initial reaction has been great," Staples said.

To get started they are bringing in more experienced employees, including company transfers and people relocating from other companies, he said. They are also hiring recent graduates from colleges throughout the U.S. The long-term model is to have about 70 percent of employees with two years or less of experience.

"I think the vast majority of our hires will come from the University of Florida and other Florida institutions," Staples said.

MindTree will have its first major recruiting effort at UF this month for winter graduates as they gear up for a larger spring recruiting class, he said.
