An automotive shop in northwest Gainesville was damaged by fire Friday evening, with black smoke billowing in the sky and flames shooting through the roof, Gainesville Fire Rescue reported.
The blaze occurred about 6 p.m. at University City Collision, 2700 NW 74th Place, according to a GFR media release.
The first crew to arrive had to breach locked gates and roll-up doors to begin stretching hoses into the building. GFR reported that firefighters encountered near black-out conditions inside.
Search and rescue crews scoured the building to make sure no one was inside. The fire was put out within 20 minutes; damage was estimated at $150,000.
GFR Lt. Keith Saunders, the incident commander, said that a law enforcement helicopter assisted by giving reports on the fire from overhead.
"Everything went right tonight," Saunders said. "The early activation of the 911 system, the reports from the law enforcement helicopter, great dispatching and having enough personnel on the scene very fast contributed to this business being saved."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
