One intruder was shot dead and another wounded in Columbia County on Thursday night by a man who was armed and ready when the two men broke into his home, according to Columbia County sheriff's officials.
Travis Brown, 26, and Johnnie Collins, 22, entered an unidentified victim's home in the 1300 block of Northeast Washington Street in Lake City at around 10:30 p.m., according to sheriff's officials. The victim told detectives that at least one of the intruders was armed with a handgun.
The victim fired at the men, killing Collins and injuring Brown, deputies said. No shots were fired by the intruders. The victim was unharmed but did not call police to report the incident.
Columbia County sheriff's deputies found Collins dead outside the home around midnight on Thursday after receiving a call from a concerned citizen reporting an injured man lying outside the home. Brown was not at the scene when deputies arrived. Het had already been driven by a friend to Lake Shore Regional Medical Center for gunshot wounds. He was later transported to Shands at the University of Florida for surgery.
Brown likely will face charges of felony murder, deputies said.
Detectives from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Scene Unit are working to determine the reason for the intruders' entry.
