Five questions with Georgia senior linebacker Michael Gilliard

Q: How valuable has it been to get other defenders playing time these past four games with standouts Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree out?

A: A bunch of those young guys, especially in place for Rambo, like Connor Norman, all those guys came in and did a great job. The guys that replaced Ogletree, Amarlo Herrera and Christian Robinson, those guys have gotten way better. I'm proud of every single one of those guys who stepped in for the guys who were suspended.

Q: Georgia is seventh in the SEC in scoring defense but played lights out against Vandy. What's the unit focusing on right now to duplicate that effort?

A: Everybody playing assignment defense, and one of the main things is running to the ball. Cut all of the small mistakes, even on third down. Against FAU, they had nine third-down conversions (on us).

Q: Georgia's offense is the best in the SEC through four games. How loose or aggressive does that allow the defense to play?

A: With those guys scoring all those touchdowns, our defense can definitely play aggressive football, blitz. If the offense puts up points, we have less worries. The pressure is on the opposing offense.

Q: As a senior, you've played against Vols QB Tyler Bray a few times. What stands out to you about him on tape?

A: He's definitely an NFL prototype quarterback. He has the NFL arm. He can sling it. We're going to have to play smart football with a guy like him. We have to make sure our DBs and guys in pass coverage are playing assignment football because he will get the ball to the receivers.

Q: Can you take anything away from the Vols' struggles the past 2 weeks?

A: I feel like all teams are getting better and better. (The Vols') receivers are getting better and better each and every game. Especially after losing (to us) last year, they feel they have to improve, and these guys are definitely going to bring their “A” game.
