Luckily for Picks, college season is 14 weeks long

It didn't take long for Dr. Football to be humbled. After a nice 8-2 record to open the season, last week was a disaster second only to Arkansas football.

The Picks had a bad Saturday. The 5-5 record is correctable, however, and it's a long season. If it was a one-week season, Dr. Football would spend all of his time that week analyzing the teams and the weather and the sports books and put everything into that one week and we'd all be happy. But I see it as a 14-week season for The Picks, and this week you'll see why I tanked it last week.

(In my mind, my voice got really loud during that rant.)

Third week of the season, and I'm already hearing voices in my head. That's what a trip to College Station will do to you.

Florida at Tennessee: I've gone back and forth on this game. If I knew Mike Gillislee was going to be healthy and play the whole game, I'd pick Florida. But the injuries, the road and Tennessee's passing attack may be too much to overcome. Maybe I'm putting too much into Tennessee's win over an average ACC team in the first week. Maybe ESPN College GameDay being in Knoxville will be a distraction for the Vols. Maybe I'm still waffling. I've said all along that we'd know a lot more about this Gator team after these two road games, and I think we learned a lot last week. But I just don't see UF making it eight in a row. Tennessee, 31-24.

Alabama at Arkansas: I have a feeling the 'Backs are going to come out with a lot of emotion and energy. And that Alabama will knock it right out of them. Alabama, 38-14.

Notre Dame at Michigan State: Michigan State was my surprise pick for the national championship game. I'm not backing off. Michigan State. 30-23.

Wake Forest at Florida State: The Deacons probably don't have one player Jimbo Fisher would trade for, but have beaten the Seminoles four of the last six times. Not this time. FSU, 42-21.

North Carolina at Louisville: A battle between two former Florida assistant coaches who worked together on the same Ron Zook staff. I'll go with Charlie Strong over Larry Fedora. Louisville, 24-21.

Arizona State at Missouri: One bonus Missouri enjoys being a part of the SEC — it gets in The Picks a lot more often. Pretty exciting, huh Mizzou? Arizona State, 27-19.

USC at Stanford: Southern Cal is just too good offensively for this game to be competitive. USC, 39-20.

Texas at Ole Miss: The Grove will be alive on Saturday … right up until the Longhorns start rolling. Texas, 38-17.

Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn: This is going to be another example of a team celebrating a big win right up until kickoff. Auburn, 28-14.

BYU at Utah: Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn retired after another shoulder injury. That's bad news for the Utes. BYU, 27-14.
