Daylene Ripley should be selected for the Spirit of Gainesville Award in Medicine because she is a shining example of how a physician practices the art of medicine! As a gynecologist-oncologist, she is dedicated to treating women with gynecologic malignancies, and complex gynecologic cases, and manages to do this with both compassion and expertise. She is a well-known and respected surgeon, with extensive experience performing minimally-invasive surgery using the daVinci robotic surgical system which provides enhanced surgical capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. It essentially allows her to perform complex procedures through just a few tiny openings. Certainly, surgery is one area where Dr. Ripley practices the art and science of medicine, and the hospital staff at North Florida Regional Medical Center can attest to her surgical renown and expertise.

But her true artistry is far more visible to those of us who are fortunate to know her and benefit from our encounters with her. This artistry is illustrated in the way she treats people - - all people - - with focused attention, empathy and respect, and a healthy dose of humor and optimism! She is approachable and easy to talk to, and is committed to sharing medical insight and knowledge with patients, colleagues and with the community. Dr. Ripley is involved with hospital committes dedicated to quality assurance, speaks at community education health events and participates in local cancer-related support groups. One of her favorite events has included hosting an exciting day for local elementary school children in which they have an opportunity to explore the newest advances in medical technologies and even obtain "hands-on" experience with robotic surgical technology. It is easy to see the joy she takes in seeing children respond enthusiastically to these exciting medical advances that are available in our wonderful Gainesville community.

It is her passion for her profession and her joy in which she approaches each day, and each person, that make Dr. Ripley an example of the Spirit of Gainesville, where there are so many dedicated professionals who give of their time, talents and treasures to our community. If you ask her practice staff what one thing about Dr. Ripley is most notable, they will describe her commitment and dedication to her patients. If you ask her patients, they will describe her compassion and kindness, and how they feel as if they are treated as family. Interesting, this last statement: family. Because at the heart of Dr. Ripley's life is her family, including her husband and three daughters, Melissa, Allison and Christine. She is wife and mother and surgeon and it is within those roles, we will see her work continue in the future!

(Dr. Ripley is a Fellow in the American College of Obsetrics and Gynecology, Full Member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, member of the Alachua County Medical Society and the Florida Society of Gynecologic Oncology).
