Horst and Luisa Ferrero founded the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation after tragically losing their first son, Sebastian due to a series of preventable medical errors including a medication overdose at Shands Hospital at UF. About Horst and Luisa Ferrero
Occupation: Founders of Sebastian Ferroro Foundation
The Ferreros courageously turned their unimaginable tragedy into a movement for change benefiting all children and families. Five years ago, with the support of many members of our community, Horst and Luisa launched the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation in with a dual mission to create a dedicated children's hospital in Gainesville, while advocating for excellence in patient safety. Horst and Luisa work tirelessly on continuing to advocate and fundraise in support of the approved new children's hospital project at UF called the Shands Hospital for Children. With the community's steadfast support and in partnership with UF&Shands, the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation is proud to have helped complete the first phase of the children's hospital, the opening of the dedicated Pediatric Emergency room in July 2011. The momentum continues and things are getting much better for the children and families who come to the University of Florida for pediatric healthcare. The children's hospital projects success is contingent on philanthropic support. Therefore the role of the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation is ever so important. In addition, the new Sebastian Ferrero Office of Clinical Quality and Patient Safety goals and programs will continue to improve quality and safety for all patients and families.
Horst Ferrero is the Co-Founder and President of the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors for Tyler's Hope and the Florida House on Capitol Hill.
Luisa Ferrero is the Co-Founder of the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors for the University of Florida Performing Arts.
It is an honor to be able to nominate two individuals who are, in my eyes, so deserving of this award. I have had the privilege of serving on the Sebastian Ferrero Board with them, and the honor of knowing them as friends. The things they have done and continue to do throughout our community are truly amazing, and I cannot thank them enough for it. This community is in need of a world class Children's Hospital, and this will happen because of these two deserving advocates.
