Indie Gainesville has rejuvinated the "Buy Local" movement in Gainesville. The person behind the scenes, running the show, is Whitney Mutch. Through Indie Gainesville, she promotes local businesses, explains why buying local benefits everyone in the community, and alerts the community to many events they otherwise wouldn't know about.

About Whitney Mutch
Years in Gainesville: 32
Spouse: A. Schaer
To quote her words on IG's first anniversary, "A year ago, we finally took action and started this blog. It was born as an idea in early July, but . . . perhaps we were shy. Who knows. The timing was right.
We didn’t expect the site to take off as fast and as, well, breathtaking as it did. We grew exponentially from the beginning.
Simply put, indiegainesville was born out of a desire to create a space where independent Gainesville businesses could be promoted, supported. We also had a deep desire to help Gainesville residents stay in the know and connect them with our beloved, treasured local businesses.
We wanted to give independent business owners a unique voice in politics. So often indie businesses must join groups with non-indie businesses, and the voices and concerns of owners of the local businesses aren’t heard.
But most of all, we wanted to celebrate all the places, people, businesses, events, and so on that make Gainesville unique in an unquantifiable way.
None of our “success” (we’re talking 2 million—yes, million—hits in the past year!) would have been possible without such a supportive community; through the ups and downs, we are sure that indiegainesville is community of beautiful, ethical people—and you who believe in the indiegainesville mission.
What isnt known widely about Whitney is that she works full time, is a parent to two young children, has a husband who runs a local business, has a father who runs a local business. She will continue with her work and is arranging to spend more time working on this and taking that "jump" independent businesses require. She even promoted this on the Indie Gainesville facebook pages!
She loves this town, and is determined to do whatever it takes to ensure the success of local businessess--without asking anything in return.
Thanks for the consideration.

I nominate Gainesville native Whitney Mutch. She is the dedicated anonymous person behind indiegainesville, a website dedicated to promoting independent businesses in the Gainesville area and sharing events with the community. The website has been up and running for over a year during which it has had over 2 millions hits.
The entire community benefits from indiegainesville. She has dedicated her most, if not all, of her spare time (she is, after all, a mother of two who works full time as a paralegal and activist in other areas) to reaching out to the community however possible and ensuring people are informed about the "unique" qualities Gainesville has to offer. She has been known to stay up very late and wake up around 4 or 5 am to start writing and making connections with the local business community.
Whitney/indiegainesville plans on expanding the website and dedicating more time to the site. She is most passionate about local business, local community, and "nurturing" this city.
Whitney serves on the Alachua County Rape Crisis Advisory Board, is President and Treasurer of another group, and is a young up-and-coming person to keep your eyes on.
