Charlotte Jeffrey, who just celebrated her 89th birthday, has voluntarily conducted free Conversational English class every Friday morning for our international community for 37 years. When she moved to Gainesville in 1975 she was looking for a volunteering project and someone mentioned to her that there were so many wives of international students who were isolated and lonely.

About Charlotte Jeffrey
Years in Gainesville: 37
Spouse: Tom (deceased)
Children: 2 sons, 1 daughter
Charlotte went door-to-door to a graduate housing complex inviting the women to her new class. It was an immediate success and has continued to be an important part of so many of our international visitors\' lives. Now, there are as many men as women in the class. Charlotte has probably touched the lives of thousands over the years and many of them continue friendships with her. People all over the world have fond memories of Gainesville because of Charlotte\'s outreach. The program will certainly continue as long as she and her other volunteer partners are able. Charlotte has volunteered at Shands every week for years as well. She also conducts a monthly Great Decisions discussion group, and has been active in several community organizations over the years.
