We would like to nominate Dr Stephen Landay for this year’s Spirit of Gainesville award in medicine. Dr Landay is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and has been serving our community since 1976. He started his pediatric practice in Gainesville after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969 and completing his pediatric residency from the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. He is a member of the Alachua County Medical Society, American Academy of Pediatrics and the Florida Pediatric Society.
About Dr Stephen Landay
Years in Gainesville: 36
Dr Landay is the recipient of the following awards and distinctions:
• Castle Connolly Top Doctors of 2012
• Compassionate Doctor Recognition of 2011
• Patient’s Choice Award of 2011.
• Best Doctors of America for 2012
Vitals Rating Service for physicians rates Dr Landay a 4 out of a possible 4 in areas such as bedside manner, accurate diagnosis, promptness, patient follow-up, and time spent.
It doesn’t take much time with both Dr Landay and his wife Barbara to see that pediatric medicine is a passion for him and not a vocation. He will quickly expose the merits of his patients (without their names) in areas of sports, theater, music and academics. His pride and support for them is evident and he takes pride in their accomplishments. It has been said that “no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” What an apt description of the Landays.
Dr Landay is a supporter of the arts and education in the Gainesville community. Every year, he supports the P.K. Yonge Performing Arts, The Gainesville Youth Chorus, the University of Florida’s Center for Performing Arts, Shands Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. He has instituted a scholarship for students at the Culinary Arts program at Eastside High School and is an avid supporter of the March of Dimes where his entire practice participates in fund raising and the annual walkathon.
Interest in pediatric medicine and support for our youth is not limited to Gainesville. He supports the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and provides music scholarships to foreign students at the Chautauqua Institute. He has attended weddings, musical recitals, Bar/Bat Mitzvah’s, athletic events, and theater productions for his patients.
We cannot think of a more deserving recipient for the Spirit of Gainesville Award than Dr Landay. Top Doctor as recognized by his patients and peers, youth supporter, Dr Landay is instrumental in building self-esteem in our leaders of tomorrow. We are fortunate to have such a caring and talented physician in our community.
