Florida is among 16 college basketball super powers committed to compete in a Nike-sponsored tournament to start the 2017-18 season.
The tournament will take place during a four-day period in November in Portland, Ore., to commemorate Nike co-founder Phil Knight's 80th birthday. Knight will turn 80 on Feb. 24, 2018.
Other teams committed to participate include Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Michigan State, Connecticut, Georgetown, Texas, Oklahoma, Stanford, Oregon, Xavier, Butler, Gonzaga and Portland. All schools have Nike apparel deals.
"It arguably is gonna be the best regular-season basketball tournament in the history of college basketball," Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis told The Detroit News. "I think it's a great way to celebrate the sport, a great way to bring programs together that have had high historical value in the NCAA Tournament and should be one heck of an event if we can pull it off."
