A Palatka man has been sentenced to life in prison for setting his wife on fire.

Khalid Abeljawwad Mohd was convicted in June of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery charges.

Mohd’s wife testified by video at his sentencing hearing Wednesday. Rema Jamel suffered second- and third-degree burns over three-quarters of her body. She said she was permanently disfigured and needs about a dozen more surgeries to recover from burns she suffered in 2010.

According to an affidavit, Mohn initially told police that Jamel was burned while grilling. He later said she intentionally set herself on fire. Authorities said the evidence didn’t support either story.

Mohd received the maximum sentence of life in prison. Mohd told the court he was innocent.
