Will Muschamp has a new recruiting coordinator.
In the wake of wide receivers coach/recruiting coordinator Aubrey Hill's unexpected resignation Thursday night, Muschamp is taking over the title (and responsibility) of Florida's recruiting coordinator.
Muschamp also takes over Hill's recruiting area in south Florida.
With preseason practice opening Friday, it seems like a bad time to put more on Muschamp's already full plate.
But he said the new title won't actually add to his heavy workload.
“You're looking at him,” said Muschamp, when he asked who was replacing Hill as recruiting coordinator. “Every day. That title doesn't mean a whole lot to me. I'm the recruiting coordinator. I recruited every player we have. If you've researched recruiting much, you probably realize that.”
Despite the unexpected shift on his coaching staff, Muschamp seemed to be concentrating on football and the start of preseason camp Friday.
Muschamp said it was a typical first day in shorts and helmets, and that he was pleased with the mental sharpness of his veteran players, who practiced in the morning. The young players went late in the afternoon/early evening.
“Most of our older guys … a lot of good retention on both sides of the ball,” Muschamp said. “I'm very pleased with the retention, and obviously they worked hard this summer as far as knowing their assignments and the things that they do. I'm very pleased with that.”
Muschamp said it also was a typical first day for the freshmen and some of the younger players.
“The young guys went tonight. That was good,” Muschamp said. “It was interesting. We lined up in some defenses I didn't know we had.
“They did a good job. Good effort and energy and excitement. When you're in helmets (and shorts), it's not worth talking much about. But it was good to be on the field with those guys.”
Muschamp said several sophomores and redshirt freshmen — including safeties Jabari Gorman and Valdez Showers — worked out with the freshmen to give them reps they might not have gotten practicing with the veterans.
“We wanted to put them in some situations,” Muschamp said. “Jabari Gorman and Valdez Showers are both going to contribute for us this year. They both went tonight because I didn't want them to stand behind Matt Elam and Josh Evans and hear them make the calls the whole time.
“I wanted Jabari and Valdez to make the calls all night. It's not a demotion at all. It has nothing to do with rank or depth chart. It's about getting guys out there and getting them turns.”
Muschamp said Buck linebacker/end Ronald Powell, who is recovering from ACL surgery, did some running in practice.
“He also did a little bit of change of direction,” Muschamp said. “He's doing well.”
Muschamp revealed Friday night that the injury to junior cornerback Jeremy Brown is a broken bone in his right wrist that he sustained during a summer weightlifting session.
“It was just a freak injury,” he said.
Muschamp said the target date for Brown's possible return is Sept. 1.
