Gainesville firefighters responding to a call at a downtown bar early Tuesday swept through the closed business and found the source of the fire in an adjacent structure, a report said.
Aided by the building's automatic sprinkler system, GFR was able to contain the fire before it did extensive damage to either business.
GFR responded at 8:06 a.m. to an alarm at the Spannk bar at 15 SW 2nd St., and firefighters saw black smoke billowing from exhaust fans, the report states. Firefighters entered the bar and swept through looking for the fire, which they located in the bar area of the 2nd Street Speakeasy Bar at 21 SW 2nd St.
The fire had spread from underneath a small shelving area into some upper decorations, creating enough heat to activate the sprinkler system, GFR said.
The firefighters extinguished the fire, but the sprinklers caused about $20,000 worth of water damage to the Speakeasy, the report stated.
No one answered the phone at the 2nd Street Speakeasy Wednesday afternoon, but a posting on the business' facebook page indicated that the owners and crew are recovering.
"Things are moving along, place is cleaned up a little, we're pulling electrical permits, power is back on. Will be doing a little cosmetic work and should be slinging drinks here real soon,'' the post read.
