Junior defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd was named to the 18th annual Bednarik Award preseason watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced.
Floyd has played in 24 career games for the Gators, making 13 starts with 69 career tackles, including 13 tackles for loss. He started the final 11 games at defensive end for the Gators in 2011, registering 46 tackles and tied for a team-high four quarterback hurries. He was a 2010 Coaches’ Freshman All-SEC Team pick.
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the nation's top defensive player since 1995. The award honors former Penn standout and former Philadelphia Eagle Chuck Bednarik, who is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Oct. 29, and the three finalists for the award will be unveiled Nov. 19. The winner of the Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 6. The formal presentation of this award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 1, 2013.
