PAT DOOLEY'S TOP 5
Top-ranked Florida hosts North Carolina State for a best-of-three series starting Saturday to determine a berth in the College World Series. My reasons why you should be at McKethan Stadium.
1. It's the end of an era
This has been a special group of players and with so many of them drafted early this week along with seniors like Preston Tucker, this is going to be the last chance for the Gator Nation to see this team play in person.
2. It's not your father's baseball
Yeah, we know it's hot. But it's not any hotter than it will be in early September and you're sitting through the Florida football season opener. College baseball has changed so much with the bats and the umpires timing the pitchers that the average game is over in 2½ hours.
3. Watch Nolan Fontana play short
It has been a pleasure to watch Fontana play for three years. He makes the routine plays routine and the impossible ones look effortless. You can argue whether he is the best defensive shortstop ever at UF, but he is definitely the most fun to watch.
4. One day you'll say …
I saw that guy play in the super regional. You never know how college players will translate to the pros, but with guys like catcher Mike Zunino of Florida and pitcher Carlos Rodon of N.C. State, you can expect to see these guys on a network game some day.
5. The whole SEC vs. ACC thing
The SEC is the big dog in the house not only in football but in baseball, with three national titles in a row. This is the only super regional where bragging rights between the two conferences are on the line. Plus, aren't dogpiles fun to watch?
