President Barack Obama does not plan to pay your utility bill as a campaign year sign of good will. But a nationwide scam is claiming just that.
On Friday, Gainesville Regional Utilities issued a warning about a nationwide scam in which utility customers are contacted via phone, text, email, social media, flier or in person with a claim that Obama is offering a one-time payment of their utility bill.
In many cases, the claim is forwarded to the customer from a friend or family member, according to GRU.
Posing as utility company representatives, the perpetrators ask customers to provide their Social Security number and other information in exchange for a Federal Reserve Bank routing number. The customers are then led to believe that the routing number can be used to make a payment on their utility bill through the GRU website.
Customers who are unsure whether correspondence that appears to be from GRU is legitimate may contact the utility's Customer Service Department at 334-3434. If the correspondence is suspicious, customers may report it to the Gainesville Police Department at 955-1818.
