Two of those, both Eastside High School students, will also head to Pittsburgh in May for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Alexandra Sourakov’s project “Life is Short When Sweet: The Effect of Dietary Sugars on the Physiology and Longevity of Caenorhabditis elegans” earned her a trip to Pennsylvania.

Her project entailed testing glucose and fructose on a type of roundworm, determining that despite prevailing thoughts that the two sugars are similar, fructose has a more deleterious effect on lifespan and overall health.

David Liu, also a student at Eastside, will take his project, “Synthetic Nanoparticle-Based Nanozymes for Pancreatic Cancer Therapy,” on the trip as well.

More than 240 students participated in the regional science fair. Award recipients were honored during a Monday night ceremony.
