A man walking home to his apartment in The Polos early Tuesday was robbed by a man with a weapon, police said.

The Gainesville Police Department said the armed robbery happened as 12:13 a.m. at the entrance to the apartment complex at 2330 SW Williston Road.

The victim told police he was approached from behind by a man who demanded his money and his phone.

During the incident, the suspect kept one hand on his pants pocket, according to the victim, and said, “Don’t make me pull this out.”

The victim said the incident ended when a vehicle startled the suspect, giving the victim time to run away.

Sgt. Courtnay Roberts and Officer B. McCarthy caught up with a man matching the suspect’s description a few blocks away. The victim identified the man as the person involved. The suspect was identified by police as Jeremy Barry, 18, of 4330 SE 80th St.

Barry’s version of events was that he asked the victim for money while walking to a relative’s home.

Police said they found a folding pocket knife with an automatic opening feature in Barry’s pants pocket.

Barry was charged with attempted armed robbery and booked into the Alachua County jail.
