Bait bicycle nabs bandit, police say

The Gainesville Police Department used a bait bicycle late Monday night to catch a suspected thief.

Police officials said there has recently been a rash of bike thefts in the area around the 1000 block of Southwest 2nd Avenue. Officer Joe Washington said he set out a bike at a bus stop and it was taken in less than a minute.

The man suspected of riding off on the bike was identified as Tyler Jason Caldwell, 30, of 914 SW 8th Ave. He was arrested a few blocks away and charged with grand theft.

Washington said Caldwell admitted to stealing other bikes in the area, but was unable to provide exact dates.

Burglary suspect found hiding on roof

Police said a man suspected of burglarizing the office at Morningside Nature Center was found hiding on the building’s roof early Tuesday.

The Gainesville Police Department arrested Timothy Lamont Brooks, 36, of 1817 NE 17th Way, on charges of burglary, criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools.

Officer Warren Brown was dispatched to the center at 3540 E. University Ave. at 11:40 p.m. Monday after a burglar alarm sounded. In an arrest report, Brown wrote that Brooks refused commands to come out of the building and was found hiding on the roof several hours later. Brown estimated that Brooks did about $1,000 in damages to a ceiling, vent system and lighting fixtures.
