Florida punter David Lerner has been named one of four finalists for the 2012 Uplifting Athlete Rare Disease Champion Award, the Uplifting Athletes foundation announced Wednesday.
Lerner, a former Buchholz star, was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in July, just weeks before the opening of fall camp. He played in six games in 2011, averaging 38.5 yards a punt.
Despite losing nearly 15 pounds and having to receive IV treatments, Lerner did not miss a practice during fall camp. He eventually won the starting punting job and was awarded a scholarship in August.
Lerner received the Dick Schapp Sportsman of the Year Award in December.
