A Middleburg man was critically injured Tuesday afternoon in a Union County crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Lewis Shawn Wilkerson, 31, was alone in a 2003 Toyota pickup when the crash happened at 4:25 p.m.

Trooper R.L. Carmichael said the Toyota was headed east on State Road 100 about three miles west of Lake Butler when it drifted off the shoulder of the road. The truck hit a culvert, went airborne and landed on its roof before overturning and coming to a stop at a treeline, according to Carmichael.

Wilkerson, who was wearing his seat belt, was taken by helicopter to Shands at the University of Florida, where he remained in critical condition on Wednesday, according to FHP.

Carmichael noted in his report that charges were pending the result of blood alcohol tests.
