4 things of note in area sports
-The eighth annual city wrestling championships will be held at the Santa Fe College gym on Friday at 6:15 p.m. Gainesville, which recently placed first at Spiegel Invitational in Sebring, along with Buchholz and Eastside will battle for city bragging rights. The Hurricanes will be gunning for their seventh city title in eight years.
-Three area boys soccer teams picked up semifinal wins in their respective district tournaments on Tuesday night, thus clinching a regional playoff berth. Oak Hall, behind three goals from Ernie Theurer and two assists from C.W. Menifee, knocked off St. Francis in a District 3-1A semifinal. The Eagles secured their first regional playoff trip since 2009 and will host St. Augustine St. Joseph in Friday's district title match. In the District 5-2A semifinals, P.K. Yonge edged Newberry 4-3 to earn its ninth consecutive regional playoff berth. Santa Fe edged Keystone Heights 2-1, claiming its second second straight playoff trip. The Raiders will host the Blue Wave in Friday night's district title match.
-The District 4 state qualifying girls weightlifting meet will be held this Saturday at Belleview, starting at 9 a.m. The area teams expected to be in action are: Bradford, Buchholz, Chiefland, Eastside, Fort White, Gainesville, Hawthorne, Interlachen, Keystone Heights, Santa Fe, Trenton, Union County and Williston. Last year, GHS finished the meet with an area-best seven lifters qualifying for the state meet.
-The Rock boys and girls basketball programs are hosting a Fight Cancer Night on Tuesday. The Lions will face Jacksonville Potter's House, with the junior varsity boys game starting at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity girls game at 6 p.m. and the boys varsity game to tip off at 7:30 p.m. “The Rock Cares!” T-shirts will be for sale, and the money from the T-shirt sales and from the admission will go toward helping the American Cancer Society. The Rock teams are expected to wear pink wristbands and shoelaces and give out mini pink and white basketballs. A commemorative pink and white basketball will be used for all three games.
