Shift for northbound I-75 traffic Wednesday night

The Newberry Road ramp will close for four hours after 9 p.m.

Staff report

Traffic is scheduled to be shifted tonight for northbound Interstate 75 traffic exiting onto Newberry Road in Gainesville as part of a Florida Department of Transportation project to widen the exit ramp.

The ramp might be closed for as long as four hours after 9 p.m. to complete the new traffic pattern and shift. Traffic will be detoured to either Archer Road or Northwest 39th Avenue, DOT reported in a news release.

Exiting traffic will be shifted to the east of the existing ramp onto the new pavement. The traffic will be shifted late tonight when the fewest number of vehicles are exiting the interstate, and should be in place by peak traffic times early Thursday morning.

The traffic shift is necessary to resurface the existing ramp. The three remaining interstate ramps already have been resurfaced.

Once this project is completed, there will be an additional right and left turn lane for the northbound exit ramp onto Newberry Road.

Reconstruction of the ramps is costing $2.2 million. The contractor has until this summer to complete the work.

Approximately 8,900 vehicles exit northbound I-75 onto Newberry Road each day to join another 50,000 vehicles already traveling on Newberry Road.
