A Brooker man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl.

Douglas Mitchell Batie, 19, was arrested by the Alachua County Sheriff's Office on Thursday evening on a warrant charging him with two counts of sexual assault by someone age 18 or older on a victim under age 12.

Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey said investigators found out about the crimes after the victim had moved out of state and was in a class where children were being taught the difference between good touches and bad touches.

"The child disclosed to school officials what had happened," Forgey said.

The Sheriff's Office then worked with officials in the other state to investigate the case. Based on statements the victim gave officials, Forgey said it appears the incidents happened in June and July of 2011.

Batie was questioned by sheriff's investigators in Alachua County.

"He confessed to some sexual involvement with the victim," Forgey said. "And he said he may have been under the influence of marijuana at the time but he could not remember."

Batie was being held at the Alachua County jail on Friday.
