Showers wins brain bowl — again

Showers of Blessings Harvest Center swept the King Celebration 2012 annual Black History and Cultural Brain Bowl and 5th Grade Spelling Bee by winning both events.

Elissa Harris, a fifth grader at P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School who represented Showers of Blessings, bested 10 other fifth graders to win the spelling bee. Eriyanna Williams, a student at Lake Forest Elementary who represented Mount Moriah Baptist Church, was the runner-up.

More than 125 men, women and children attended the event held last Thursday at the King Center.

In the brain bowl contest, Showers of Blessings won its third consecutive victory after defeating the Precious Pearls, the youth group of the Mu Upsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Showers of Blessings received $500 and Precious Pearls, the runner-up, received $300. All of the contestants received King Celebration T-shirts and certificates and the winners also received trophies.

"This is all about learning our history," said Natalie Williams-King, the Showers head coach. Kunitha Melecio served as assistant coach.

"They worked well together and enjoyed each other," said Phyllis Hilliard, the Precious Pearls head coach.

Twenty-seven students made up five cultural brain bowl teams.

The Showers of Blessings team included Raneisha Boston, Olexis Ellis, Sequinta McCreary, Jermanica Wilson and Ariel Word. The Precious Pearls team included LaMicah Lindsey, Gabrielle Howard, Ana' Nichols-Holcy, Kamille Wade and Amanda Tinker.

The Mount Moriah Baptist Church team included Brandy McCone, Cailynn Saulsberry, Kelsey Saulsberry, Mikayla Suggs, Ladale Thomas, Timothy Thomas and Freddy Williams. The Mount Olive team included Damarcus Causey, Damariel Causey, Natalie Hill, Brandon Morgan and Briana Parker. The Woodland Park Boys and Girls Club team included David Green, Kendrick Hill, Charles Jones, Jhawaan Johnson and Jacobi King.

Spelling bee contestants were: Sha'wan Johnson, Bartley Temple United Methodist Church; Wesley Hill, Mount Olive AME Church; Jonaia Godbolt, Jalliyah Jones, De'Andre Irwin and E'Montae Shannnona, all of the Woodland Park Boys and Girls Club; Leigha Conagea, Eastwood Meadows Boys and Girls Club; Bri'yonna Hill, Mount Moriah Baptist Church, and Johanna Dell, Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
