Five things of note in area sports

*Trenton track star Brandon Stone, who jumped 7 feet in the high jump last spring, verbally committed to Florida State on Tuesday, according to his mother. Also a football star, Stone, who missed three games due to injury, ran for 1,063 yards and 13 touchdowns as the Tigers advanced to the Class 1A regional finals. He will sign his National Letter of Intent with the Seminoles on Feb. 1 at 3:30 p.m.

*Former Buchholz offensive line coach Keith Chattin has been named the new football coach at Lennard High School. Chattin, who is originally from Georgia, spent eight years as an assistant coach at five different schools in that state before coming to the Bobcats for this past season.

*The Eastside boys swimming and diving team, coached by Jon Allen, won the FHSAA Class 2A Academic Team title with a 3.691 grade point average this past fall. The Rams girls swim team, which is also under the direction of Allen, placed second in Class 2A with a 3.693 GPA. Eastside's girls cross country team posted a 3.931 GPA to place second in Class 2A and the Trenton volleyball team was second in Class 1A with a 3.499 GPA. Other area teams that were ranked: Eastside boys cross country (8th in Class 2A, 3.589 GPA); Eastside volleyball (7th in Class 5A, 3.536 GPA); Eastside boys golf (8th in Class 1A, 3.534 GPA); Eastside girls golf (23rd in Class 1A, 3.288 GPA).

*31 area senior football players will be suiting for Team Florida in the War of the Border All-Star Game at Valdosta State this Saturday at 2 p.m. The Florida team is under the direction of Bradford coach Derek Chipoletti.

*Buchholz boys basketball will host its annual Bobcat Shootout on Jan. 27-28. On Friday, Newberry vs. P.K. Yonge, 6 p.m.; Buchholz vs. Naples Golden Gate at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Newberry vs. Golden Gate, 2 p.m.; Eastside vs. Clearwater, 3:45 p.m.; Gainesville vs. Daytona Beach Mainland, 5:30 p.m.; Buchholz vs. Deltona Pine Ridge, 7:15 p.m.
