Two Ocala woman were seriously injured Monday afternoon when the vehicle they were in blew a tire and overturned on Interstate 75 just south of Gainesville.

The accident limited northbound traffic to a single lane for about an hour.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper J.W. Smith said the women were in a white Isuzu Trooper headed north in the left lane at the point where I-75 crosses Paynes Prairie when the left rear tire blew out around 2 p.m. The Isuzu overturned twice before coming to a stop, Smith said.

The passenger, Monica Kerrison, 22, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected during the crash, Smith said. The driver, Charlene Tucker, 24, who was wearing a seat belt, remained inside the Isuzu.

Both women were taken to Shands at the University of Florida.

No charges were filed.
