A four-car accident late Saturday afternoon sent at least one person to the hospital and caused westbound traffic on Newberry Road to be diverted.

The accident happened in front of Tire Kingdom at 3950 Newberry Road. Gainesville Police officer Ben Tobias said at the scene that the cause of the crash had not been determined and that he believed one person was taken by ambulance a hospital.

All the cars ended up in the westbound lanes, but witnesses said some of the vehicles had initially been heading east.

"Two of them were one way on Newberry Road and two the other way," said Eric Surim, a manager at Tire Kingdom. "We heard the noise and everybody stopped and ran out here, and saw that one car was kind of airborne."

Police diverted westbound traffic at several spots along Newberry Road starting at 34th Street.
