OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Florida softball senior Michelle Moultrie was one of 12 athletes named to the 2012 USA Softball Women's National Team, announced by the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) Wednesday.
The honor for Moultrie, a 2011 All-American, comes just three months after competing with the 2011 US Women's National Team that helped Team USA to the Gold Medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in October in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Last July, Moultrie and the U.S. team surged to the 2011 World Cup of Softball Gold Medal in Oklahoma City.
This year's squad will compete at the International Softball Federation (ISF) Women's World Championship following a 2012 USA Softball Women's National Team and USA Softball Women's Elite National Team Selection Camp in June. The Women's National Team will compete at the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada, and the World Championship in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. The Women's Elite National Team will compete at the World University Games in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Moultrie returns as the Gators' lone senior heading into the 2012 Florida softball season. She was named the co-Most Outstanding Player at the 2011 Women's College World Series, where Florida competed for the national championship for the second time in three years. Moultrie rallied for single-season school record batting clip and on-base percentages her junior year, registering a .443 batting average and .519 on-base mark. Moultrie additionally shattered the Florida single-season hits mark, with 101, and tallied a school-record 31-of-34 stolen bases.
Moultrie helped propel Florida to a fourth-consecutive WCWS appearance — the first SEC team to accomplish the feat. Florida (56-13) played for a national championship for the second time in three seasons as Moultrie turned in a WCWS tournament-high 13 hits and four home runs in UF's efforts en route to the finale.
An additional five athletes will be named to the 2012 USA Softball Women's National Team at the June Selection Camp and the 17-athlete roster for the 2012 USA Softball Women's Elite National Team will be decided. Following the Selection Camp, members of both teams will play each other in exhibition games before beginning competition.
