Putnam County officials have decided to close Ochwilla Elementary School on Monday because of the smoke from the nearby Olive Fire on the Levy Prairie.

The fire has been burning and smoldering for eight weeks near State Roads 20 and 21. At times the smoke has been so thick or been mixed with fog that visibility was significantly restricted and state officials shut down nearby roadways.

According to the Florida Forest Service, the fire covers 750 acres.

Putnam County school officials had not made decision early Monday about what to do for the rest of the week.
