Once again I need to defend my letter of Dec.23, concerning President Obama's speech to the troops on the occasion of our withdrawal from Iraq. Now Allen Hughes makes his case that Iraq was not Obama's fault, but George Bush's.
Of course it was Bush and Cheney who fraudulently brought about that conflict. No argument there. My criticism of Obama was mainly the statement he made saying that the U.S. differs from the "old imperialisms", in that we go to war because it's "right," and we have "no interest in territory and resources."
That was a colossal lie and one that our former wretched president must have loved. Additionally, I must point out that when he was on the campaign trail in 2008, our incumbent repeatedly assured voters that we would be out of Iraq within three months. Instead, that pointless and obscene war continued for nearly three years after Obama was inaugurated.
To sum up, I do NOT blame Obama for starting the Iraq War. He did not, of course. But he perpetuated it for close to three as our troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives. That was something Bush could have easily done: prolonged the death and destruction and then rationalized it with the rhetoric of a noble crusade.
