4 things of note in area sports
-P.K. Yonge and Union County lead their respective categories following fall sports competition in the 2011-12 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards point standings released on Wednesday. The Blue Wave are at the top of the Class 3A/2A Public group, while the Tigers are atop the Class 1A category. Other area schools that are ranked include Buchholz (4th in Class 7A); Gainesville (2nd in Class 6A); Cornerstone Academy (9th-tie in Class 2A Private); Trenton (2nd in Class 1A); Lafayette (4th-tie in Class 1A).
-Oak Hall sophomore cross country star Brittney Olinger was named to the 2011 flrunners.com all-state third team. Olinger was recently named The Sun's girls cross country runner of the year for an impressive fourth consecutive season. An all-state third team member last year as well, Olinger led the Eagles to the their second straight FHSAA Class 1A state runner-up finish this past fall.
-Buchholz senior Chris Godwin, who was recently named The Sun's boys cross country runner of the year for the second straight season, was also named to the 2011 flrunners.com all-state first team. He was the FHSAA Class 4A state runner-up and also qualified for the Foot Locker Nationals race. P.K. Yonge junior Garrett Westlake, who was a first-team all-area selection for the fourth straight season, was named to the flrunners.com all-state third team.
-Oak Hall's junior kicker Danny Stirt, a small-school first-team all-area selection, has been selected to participate in the Kohl's Underclassman Challenge set for Saturday and Sunday at Orlando Lake Highland Prep. He was one of 25 kickers from around the nation who were invited from among the 354 kickers who competed in the Kohl's National Winter Showcase events.
