At 6:25 am. power went down for about 1,900 Gainesville Regional Utility customers, but it was soon restored to most.
The problems seemed to start in the 200 block of Southeast Fourth Avenue with underground equipment, said Dan Jesse, spokesman for GRU. At 6:35 a.m., service was restored to 800 customers through automatic rerouting of power.
By 7:06 a.m., the rerouting had restored almost all service. However, Alachua County officials said the outage at the Wilson Building has caused ongoing telephone and Internet problems in county offices.
Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey said the problem was apparently due to a backup power system that did not immediately kick in. Forgey said it was not clear how soon all service would be restored.
According the to Gainesville Police Department, the outage involved an area from University Avenue north to 39th Avenue and between Northwest 13th Street and Sixth Street. The outage affected traffic lights.
