Today is the deadline to register to vote or change party affiliation in time for the Jan. 31 Gainesville City Commission elections and the Republican presidential primary.

Registration forms are available at the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections office at 111 SE First Ave. or on the office’s website at

Forms must be delivered or postmarked by Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The office has an after-hours drop box, where applications will be accepted until midnight Wednesday.

Florida is a closed primary state, so only registered Republicans will be able to vote in the GOP primary.

There will not be a Democratic presidential primary as President Barack Obama, a Democrat, is seeking re-election.

As of Sunday, there were 42,963 Republicans in Alachua County, making up 28.5 percent of registered voters, according to the Supervisor of Elections. Democrats accounted for 50.4 percent of the total.
