The Gainesville Sun photographers recorded the year's events with images that reveal the beauty of nature, the excitement of sports and the everyday moments that show readers who they are.

Photo editor Rob Witzel and staff photographers pored through thousands of images shot in the past 12 months to select the best photos of the year.

Digital cameras and laptop computers with Internet access have made it easier to shoot photos for print and online use. But it still requires a photographer's keen eye to turn an image into a storytelling tool.

The photographs here were chosen for their ability to capture -- in a single frame -- an image that tells a story about the community we live in. The photographs were chosen for their news value, their insight and their creativity.

Here are the 2011 photographs chosen by Sun staff as the most memorable, poignant and representative of our community.
