A 3-year-old child in a Putnam County camping area was killed this weekend when a truck driven by a family member backed over the boy, police said.
The child, Landon A. Teitloff, who lived in Pomona Park south of Palatka, was playing at about 4:50 p.m. Saturday when a pickup truck driven by Victoria Suzanne Higginbotham, 32, also of Pomona Park, backed up into the boy, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.
He was taken to Putnam County Hospital, where he died.
The relationship between the child and Higginbotham was not specified in the release.
The FHP is investigating to determine whether alcohol played a role in the boy's death.
The incident happened at Hog Waller Mud Bog and ATV at 445 County Road 310, southeast of Interlachen, during a mud-bogging event, a rural motorsport in which enthusiasts drive trucks through muddy pits.
On Sunday, Hog Waller expressed sympathy for Landon's death and set up a guestbook on its website.
“On December 31, 2011, a very unfortunate accident occurred in one of our camping areas,” the company wrote on its website. “Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of little Landon.”
