Music scene decks the halls

Can you hear the bells? The holiday season is here so let your ears open a few presents early and treat yourself to carols galore — along with a diverse range of other musical celebrations.

From orchestras to flutes to carillons, a variety of instrumental concerts are coming to town. Or for a more interactive experience, sing along with several caroling concerts, complete with hot cocoa and holiday decorations to get you in the yule-tide spirit.

Several upcoming events benefit charities including the 15th Annual Holiday Traditions: A Musical Celebration concert, which is sponsored by STOP! Children's Cancer inc. Proceeds from this concert Dec. 11 benefit the UF College of Medicine for pediatric cancer research.

Other events are ideal for children and the entire family including the Gainesville Youth Chorus Holiday Concert on Saturday, the “Bright Christmas Concert” featuring the Gainesville Community Band on Sunday and the “Singing Into the Holidays” concert by the Santa Fe Singers on Dec. 8. There is something for everyone this holiday season, as the musical scene in Gainesville decks it halls and gears up for the 2011 holiday season.

Gainesville Youth Chorus Holiday Concert

What: Kick off this holiday season with this family-friendly children's chorus concert.

When: 5-6 p.m. Saturday

‘United Celebrate'

What: Bilingual Christmas concert features Christian singer Dgan Galarza, The Galarza Family, a mariachi band and members of local churches.

Cost: Free.

‘Bright Christmas Concert'

What: The Gainesville Community Band's annual concert showcases holiday favorites for the whole family.

When: 2 p.m. Sunday

Where: Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall, 3000 NW 83rd St.

Cost: Suggested donation of $5-$10 per person or $10-$20 per family


Sounds of the Season: ‘Herald the Holidays'

What: More than 300 performers from the UF Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Women's Chorale, Gainesville Civic Chorus and Men's Glee Club appear in this eclectic, up-beat holiday show hosted by President Bernie Machen and sponsored by the UF College of Fine Arts and the School of Music.

When: 7 p.m. Sunday

Where: Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 315 Hull Road

Cost: Free but a ticket is required and are available at the box office starting one hour before the concert.


‘Holidays and Winds' Concert

What: The Santa Fe Winds and the Percussive Collective perform favorites such as “Sleigh Ride” and “Greensleeves” along with the Guatamalan piece “La Quema Del Diablo.”

When: 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday

Advent Organ Concerts

What: The Gainesville chapter of the American Guild of Organists presents a series of concerts
