P. K. Yonge only needed an hour to take care of Master's Academy of Oviedo in straight sets in a Class 3A, Region 1 quarterfinal volleyball match Tuesday night.
The young and talented Blue Wave (24-4) won by scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-7, ending the season for the visiting Eagles.
Freshman Jordyn Saulsberry and eighth-grader Jac'cara Walker led the way for the Blue Wave with 14 and 10 kills, respectively, while sophomore Kayla Simmons had a match-high 31 assists.
Senior Danielle Tatro paced the Eagles (12-16) with a match-high 11 digs.
“We really didn't know what to expect from them, and we just wanted to make sure we took care of the ball on our side of the court,” Blue Wave head coach Cobey Shoji Hutzler said. “I think we have a really good ball-control game. We tend to out ball-control people, and I think that's what we eventually did to them. Plus, our serving was very strong tonight.
“We served tough and just took them out of their offense.”
The Blue Wave will host St. Francis on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in regional semifinal action.
“We have always had a goal of getting better every day, and we still have things that we can get better at and know we need to get better at to advance all the way to state, which is our goal,” Hutzler said. “We'll be back in the gym tomorrow because we know this isn't over.”
