ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Florida's soccer team starts the defense of its SEC Tournament title tonight against a familiar opponent, Georgia.
Who: Florida (14-6) vs. Georgia (12-5-2)
When: 8:30 tonight
Where: Orange Beach (Ala.) SportsPlex
Gainesville-area radio: AM-850
Georgia (12-5-2), the No. 5 seed, is No. 4-seeded Florida's (14-6) most common opponent in league tournament play, as today's match is the eighth tourney meeting in the 17-year history of each program.
Five of the six SEC Eastern Division teams advanced to the SEC Tournament, with regular-season champion South Carolina the top seed.
The league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship goes to the winner of the SEC Tournament.
Florida took a 1-0 win when the two teams met in the opening day of 2011 SEC action in Athens, Ga., on Sept. 23. Junior Erika Tymrak scored off the through ball from sophomore Taylor Travis in the 70th minute.
Florida placed four on 2011 All-SEC teams. A pair of Gator juniors are repeat selections for the 11-member All-SEC first team — midfielder Erika Tymrak and defender Kathryn Williamson. Senior outside back Jazmyne Avant and junior midfielder Holly King are All-SEC second team selections. Florida also placed a pair of midfielders on the 13-member SEC All-Freshman team — Buchholz alum Havana Solaun and Annie Speese.
Although Florida leads all league teams with nine SEC Tournament titles, only the 2007 and 2010 titles came at the Orange Beach SportsPlex. Seven of the last eight SEC Tournaments have been held in Orange Beach, Ala.
