Man, 30, arrested in Sept. 15 robbery

A man has been arrested in connection with the mid-September robbery of a 61-year-old woman as she stood next to her car.

Rayford Smith, 30, of Bradenton, was arrested late Thursday on a robbery charge, according to a report filed by the Gainesville Police Department.

Witnesses had told police that Smith ripped the purse from the woman's arm shortly after 10 p.m. on Sept. 15, then shoved her into her car and ran off. The incident happened in the parking lot of the Sunshine Park Apartments at 1901 NW Second St., according to police.

Smith was being held on Friday at the Alachua County jail.

Detention officer arrested in drug case

A Levy County Sheriff's Office detention officer was arrested on Thursday in connection with the illegal possession and sale of oxycodone.

Richard Monroe Harris, 26, of Cross City, was charged with one count of sale of a controlled substance and possession with the intent to distribute, according to a Florida Department of Law Enforcement press release.

The investigation began in July when the Sheriff's Office asked FDLE to look into allegations that Harris was using and participating in the sale of prescription drugs in the community.

FDLE investigators found that Harris has been a broker for a number of drug sales. Harris was arrested after he acted as the middle man in a controlled transaction involving oxycodone, according to the news release.

Agents allege that Harris was brokering prescription drugs for cash as well as acquiring pills for his personal use.
