A Gainesville man was arrested Wednesday evening on theft and burglary charges after a witness told police the man was using a bicycle and shopping cart to steal a weight bench.
Samuel Antonio Mitchell, 24, of 2002 NW 4th St., was charged with theft and two counts of burglary when he was arrested by the Gainesville Police Department.
A witness told police Mitchell had been seen walking into a storage area on Northeast 10th Street around 6 p.m. and then returning a short time later with a shopping cart containing a bicycle tire rim. According to the witness, Mitchell loaded a weight bench from the storage area into the shopping cart with the rim, then rode off on a bicycle while pulling the shopping cart.
Based on a description provided by the witness, officers said they spotted Mitchell a few blocks away.
According to an arrest report, Mitchell told police he is getting ready to move and was looking for discarded items for his new apartment.
Mitchell was booked into the Alachua County jail.
Since turning 18, Mitchell has served three state prison sentences, according to Florida Department of Corrections records. He was most recently released in March 2010. His conviction records include 13 burglary convictions and one for grand theft.
