A Melrose man received life threatening injuries in a single vehicle crash early Monday morning.

Robert Jason Chamberlain, 23, was taken to Shands at the University of Florida in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP Trooper M. L. Quade said Chamberlain was along in his 2003 Chevy Silverado when the crash happened northeast of Melrose at the intersection of Clay County Road 219 and Cygnet Lane.

Based on evidence at the scene, Quade said it appeared Chamberlain had been northbound on the county road when his truck left the pavement. The Silverado headed into a private pasture where it went through six wooden fences before coming to a stop.

Charges in the case were pending the results of blood alcohol testing, Quade wrote in a report about the crash. The trooper also noted that Chamberlain was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
