No. 2 MARCUS LATTIMORE
South Carolina running back
Why he's No. 2: Don't be surprised if Lattimore emerges as a strong Heisman candidate in his true sophomore season. As a freshman in 2010, he had a huge impact at USC - and in the SEC, rushing for 1,197 yards and a school-record 17 touchdowns. Like all good Steve Spurrier backs, Lattimore is a double threat, catching 29 passes for 412 yards and two touchdowns last season. Opposing defenses will not want to hear this: Lattimore, who was already plenty fast and plenty strong a year ago, has improved in both areas in the offseason. He's bulked up to 231 pounds and has lowered his 40 time. Yikes.
Key number: 182. That's the number of yards Lattimore shredded the Georgia defense for in only his second college game. The performance announced that he, and the Gamecocks, had arrived in the SEC.
Fun fact: Lattimore is one five-star prospect the recruiting analysts were dead right on. He was rated the No. 1 overall player in the nation by SuperPrep and the No. 2 running back in the nation by the Sporting News. He's clearly lived up to his five-star status.
